Summer reading challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge takes place over the summer holidays throughout the UK. Run by national charity The Reading Agency, and delivered with the support of the UK public library network, it is the UK’s biggest free reading promotion for primary-aged children.

The Challenge reaches over 700,000 families each year, motivates children to keep reading during the summer holidays, and helps them to maintain their reading skills and confidence.

Ready Set Read!

Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a new theme. For 2023, The Reading Agency has teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust to create ‘Ready, Set, Read!’, the challenge will celebrate play and participation, encouraging children to engage in games and sports in any way that best suits them.

Ready, Set, Read! will showcase how reading can be active and engaged, and can itself involve teamwork and community. Children will join the fictional team and their animal mascots as they use their skills to weave their way through a summer obstacle course.

Visit your local library

All children need to do is read 6 books over the summer holidays. They can either visit their local library where there is a wide selection of books for them to choose from or register online and read books that they have at home or any of our children’s e-books. Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate, a free family swim voucher and gain entry into a prize draw.

Children’s Facebook page

Powys Library Service will be encouraging families to read together for fun over the Summer holidays. We will have activities on our Children's Facebook page throughout the holidays, as well as events in some of our libraries. Check with your local branch for more information.
